A Bushel of Apple Thoughts |

Just a few thoughts...
iBrotha
I recently read that it's been 2 years since Rodney O. Lain ("The iBrotha" and Apple columnist and advocate) killed himself. I'm one of the people who Rodney's passionate writing has touched. I always liked his writing style because he never held back - he just let 'er rip regardless of the consequences. Rodney was a die-hard Mac user, and while I didn't personally know him, I have something to say about being overzealous about anything in life. As my late father used to say, "too much of anything is no good".
I absolutely love Apple and the products they make. I love technology first and foremost, and what it can help us achieve, and obviously Apple makes the coolest stuff on the planet, and they usually manage to make it mind-blowingly easy to use as well.
But I don't let Apple be the be-all and end-all of my life. There are lots of other things I do (you can check out my personal blog if you're really that bored) than just thinking about Macs all day.
I'm not a psychiatrist, and I don't pretend to understand the depression that Rodney had at times, but I do know that Apple was his passion. I think that no matter who you are, whatever your passion is - don't let it consume you.
Holy Switchin' Batman!
To lighten things up a bit, I ran across an article (via MacSurfer) that I would have thought was an April Fools prank had I not had iCal open to tell me otherwise. The Holy Observer, of all places, tells of a Cincinnati man who is expressing more excitement about his recent conversion to the Mac than his recent conversion to Christianity.
That's right, one Steve Phillips claims that his buddy Ted helped him convert to Christianity. Switching to the Mac however, was something he did all on his own after lots of research. According to the article, "Philips also cited moral reasons for the changes, specifically the fact that millions of people are victimized by Microsoft's poor security, and the company knowingly sells a faulty product."
And it seems that things are going great for Steve post-switch, but his family has a few choice things to say. I can't paraphrase it any better than it's written so here's a paragraph:
"All Steve can talk about lately is Mac, Mac, Mac," complained sister Yvette. "Yesterday he went on and on about how Safari and Panther are going to revolutionize the way people use computers. It's like he's on another continent." Philips's mother Jackie has been distressed by the change as well: "Stevie used to help me with my computer, you know, because I'm not so good at getting the world wide net to work right. But he hasn't helped me in weeks. He just keeps saying, 'Ma, I can't support Bill Gates by helping you with your computer anymore.' Who is Bill Gates? I don't know what to do!"
Steve's friends too are upset:
"My friends made fun of me for a while, and that was hard. But I just told them I'm different now—the old, Windows-using Steve was gone, and a new, enlightened Mac-user had taken his place." The friction with friends is aggravated by the fact that Philips regularly seeks to convince his Windows-based friends that they, too, should make the switch.
Even Steve's co-workers have a hard time with his new switches:
"What, Steve, a Christian? I had no idea. But I guess it would be pretty easy to miss, what with him shoving that stupid PowerBook in my face four or five times a day. Geez, I wish he'd just leave me alone and let me live my life the way I want to."
This just seems too crazy to be true, but if it is, then kudos to Steve, and everybody just get off his back! If you loved him you'd support him. And buy him an iPod for his birthday.
In case you missed it...
The Wall Street Journal interviewed Steve Jobs and there are some really interesting statements made by Steve in it.
Some of the salient points: Prices aren't going up on iTunes, Steve used the word "grokked" in a sentence, Apple will not be adding .WMA to iPod unless things go really bad for Apple, there will be no video iPod or cell phone/PDA devices from Apple, and Jobs was able to attend the same meeting as Steve Ballmer without getting into an epic, intergalactic space fight, Dragonball Z style.
Last but not least
Apple has teamed up with BMW to deliver the first integrated iPod car adapter. According to MacMinute, the two companies took out a two-page ad: "... you can control your iPod through the existing audio system and multi-function steering wheel. Which means no loss of power. No loss of sound quality. And no loss of control."
Spiffy! Now what about us folks with no line-in that have to resort to crappy sounding and easily interrupted FM transmitters? You have work yet to do Apple.

Hmmm.... no.... no I don't know that it's a satirical site. I'm going to blithely ignore that fact and pretend that there IS a Steve Phillips that he switched to the Mac. Because if there isn't a Steve Phillips that switched to the Mac, would life be worth living? Could we go on without all the great things Steve has done? I don't think so.
Steve Phillips, thanks for all the laughs and all you have done for this great country.
Yours Truly,
Some guy who doesn't take the time to check whether or not the source of an article is a satirical site, because really, who has the time?

or as my dad says: Take or do everything in moderation, and you'll be fine. Except Heroin. Heroin in moderation or in ANY quantity is not good. And here i'm talking to you iKen ;)

Steve is a friend of mine. He did switch. He is a rock, ney, and island. I hope he keeps his resolve and doesn't give in to the forces of evil once again.

If you ever teach a yodeling class, probably the hardest thing is to keep the students from just trying to yodel right off. You see, we build to that.
