Headless Mac: Could it be True!?
Holy cow, talk about a bombshell. Today two of the more reputable Mac rumor sites both posted information about the very same rumor. And when sites such as Think Secret and AppleInsider - the veritable granpappies of rumor sites - both say the say thing, you know something is up!

The rumored product is none other than the headless iMac that has been both clamoured for and naysayed by Mac and PC users alike for going on what seems like three centuries now.

Think Secret's "highly reliable" sources claim that said uberMac will be a sliver of a pizza box (think LC II) that could slip under a monitor or stood up sideways.

AppleInsider's "multiple independant sources" refer to the very same code-name that ThinkSecret's sources do: Q88, which lends even more credence to the whole thing.

Both sites cite eerily similar stats, although as ThinkSecret states, these are "expected" features and not specs reported by their sources. And really, they're very basic specs that you would figure any unit from Apple would have: a combo drive, 40GB hard drive, 256 MB RAM, and all the usual input/output suspects such as USB, FireWire 400, 10/100 ethernet, and Airport Extreme support. (Anybody coulda guessed that!)

The only things the two bigwig rumor sites disagree on is the price. PopSecret - er, sorry, ThinkSecret states a price tag of $499 while AI just says it will, "retail for below (US) $600" - so actually they're not conflicting, ThinkSecret is just a tad more specific.

AI claims the headless Mac originally had an iPod dock, but it was (at least temporarily) scrapped. ThinkSecret digs deeper and talks about why Apple would finally make such a Mac:

"Think of your traditional iPod owner," said a source. "This new product will be for a Windows user who has experienced the iPod, the ease of use of the iTunes software, and has played around with a Mac at an Apple retail store just long enough to know he'd buy one if it were a little cheaper."

Both sites also agree on an announcement at MacWorld Expo on January 11th, so the plot thickens. Is Apple perhaps purposely leaking information to build up hype? We'll just have to wait and see - maybe we'll have a late Christmas present from Apple!

Oh and you can hopefully expect some analysis on this subject from us tomorrow and/or Friday. This rumor is just way too meaty to not dig in and chew on for a few days.

Here we go again. We'll have to wait and see. Always remember that Apple has many products that never see the light of day. although, I have thought about what it would be like to have a PowerBook without a screen. Nice and thin. Set it on the shelf like a book. This sounds very similar.

Oh, ya, one we can definately count on is the Garageband hardware. I think it is going to be a box like M-Audio's Firewire Solo. Also, if the rumors about iLife '05 are true, that looks really good too! Garageband 2.0!

I have been thinking about something like this, to use as a basic media center. Perhaps take an old PowerBook with S-Video and hook it up to my TV. It would be great to be able to play my entire music collection and watch the visualizer, all I would need is a remote, and I have seen a few. Can play dvds, vcds, and with an external TV tuner card and the right software, you might even be able to record the shows you don't have time to watch. If this new "uberMac" has the right stuff, it would be easier than finding an old powerbook online and ripping the screen off, and for the price, it might be worth it.

Of course it's a hoax! Pulllease...

i like the screenless powerbook idea. i'm so excited for macworld. *begins to drool*

wondering... will there be a headless imac (why won't they just call it a headless powerbook)? they could call it powie junior.

Eh, I rather save up my money and get a nice PowerBook :-).

 Deep Thoughts
When you die, if you go somewhere where they ask you a bunch of questions about your life and what you learned and all, I think a good way to get out of it is just to say, "No speaka English."
