No Tiger Rumors!? MacFixit To the Rescue! |
|
Ok, what's the deal? Early this week the Mac rumor sites were going full-bore, and now, at the end of the week, when we really need a fix going into the weekend, nothing. I mean, rumors don't have to be substantiated with any fact whatsoever - don't these guys know how to make stuff up? Apparently CARS is the only site that knows how to get it done.
And sure, Think Secret has an article about Remote Desktop 2, but WWDC is fast approaching, as is the Apple music event where iTunes Europe is anticipated - you'd think some quality rumors would pop up at some point. Then again, Airport Express was a pretty big surprise so maybe not.
Anyway, with the dearth of Mac rumors lately, thank heavens for MacFixit! They're not known as a rumor site, and I'm not saying they're starting now, but at least they have some stuff for us to sink our teeth into. Speaking of teeth, we're talking about OS X 10.4, a.k.a. Tiger here, and some things we may see with the next major update to OS X.
We're going back a few days here, but on Tuesday their mac.column.ted feature (a nomenclature similar to OS X's scheme for preference files) talks about how OS X is modifying how Startup Items works. Apparently Apple is moving towards eliminating good ole' Startup Items as we know them and replacing them with something called Bootstrap Daemons. Before you run and hide under the bed, relax, things won't noticeably change that much. As far as we can tell this late on a Friday night after being slightly alcohol-impaired, Bootstrap Daemons will come into their own as Fast-User Switching steps more to the forefront. Bootstrap Daemons load items at different points in the startup sequence than Startup Items (this is where semantics are just going to totally screw us) but suffice it to say that Bootstrap Daemons should make things ... uh ... better. And stuff.
Next up, on Wednesday, MacFixit points us to a System Migration feature that's apparently already available with the newly announced G5 PowerMacs. MacFixit has screenshots and everything, but here's the lowdown:
This feature evidently works in the following manner:
• On first boot, you're given the opportunity to connect a FireWire cable between your new G5 and your old Mac.
• The Setup Assistant walks you through various types of files on your old Mac -- user folders (and accounts), applications, system add-ons, etc. -- and lets you choose whether or not to transfer them to your new G5.
• The Setup Assistant then proceeds to transfer the appropriate files and completes the setup process.
Spiffy, eh? No doubt these features will be included in 10.3 Tigger. Er, Tiger sorry (hey it -is- pretty late and a Friday, what do you expect?).
Last but not least, on Thursday MacFixit pointed out that Apple invited some users to download a preview version of their Spoken Interface software. These users had previously filled out a questionaire and are apparently serving as beta-testers for the software that will most likely show up in Tiger. As the email notification to the users states:
The Mac OS X spoken interface provides an additional way to use your Macintosh computer that does not require using a mouse or seeing the screen. In addition to speaking the contents of documents, the spoken interface speaks a description of all the activities taking place on the computer, such as which applications are running, how many windows are open, and much more. You can also control your computer using only the keyboard.
So there you have it. Not really earth-shattering stuff, but still somewhat revealing about 10.4. In any case, it's all we got!
In case you were wondering why we didn't just consult our own resident genius and rumorologist, Cosmic Stan, well, he took off early this week mumbling about "talking flapjacks with 90 nanometer chocolate chips". We reckon he'll be back sometime soon and perhaps he'll help us shed more light on some of the features Tiger will have to offer.
Until then, don't soil yourself, slap any naysaying PC users in the face with a trout, and keep on Mac'in!

Mhhh ... Apple is making me drool again ... the change from 10.1 to Panther was like going from earth to paradise ... if Tiger will keep up the tradition make things faster and more stable instead going the way of windose to be slower with every new version, i swear that'll give my love for Apple a new boost.

remember when Cosmic Stan wanted use to meetup at the waffle house in the nude .... I was kinda angry that I was the only one that shown up but umm...umm Good waffles though. I also had to explain the cold air and shrinkage effect but that old lady just kept laughing and telling me that I their was a part of me that resembles her third husband weird.

Hah! That Cosmic Stan! Such a kidder.
I think what he actually said was that waffles are naked and that they shouldn't be going around in public like that. He started knitting them little hats and sweaters and stuff and sold them on eBay. They went over pretty well.
