Tiger release date confirmed |
|
Where in the heck is Tiger? I'm about ready to go on a safari (no bad pun intended, seriously) in search of this elusive animal. For those not in-the-know, I'm speaking of course about Mac OS X 10.4, codenamed 'Tiger' - the upcoming major operating system update from Apple.
For a while the only thing we had to go on was that Apple said we could expect Tiger in the first half of 2005. There's still almost 2 months left for that date to expire, but many a Mac fan is getting just a teensy bit antsy. Plus, late last month, many rumor sites started pounding on the fact that Apple would release the majestic cat into the wild sometime in April (mid-April to be not-so-precise). Some pointed to April 15th, while others put a blindfold on and played pin the date on the calendar and came up with random dates. A few even suggested April 1st, but that date has come and gone with nary an announcement from Apple. (Or WAS there a non-announcement that was an April Fool's joke that none of us picked up on? We may never know.)
Whatever the case, we gots no OS X 10.4 and no word from Apple on when to expect it. But ho, what's this tidbit from Slashdot that Apple's forthcoming OS is actually being demoed at a government/technology-related Expo? That's right, Apple has Macs at FOSE (er had - the convention ended today) that are running the same build of OS X that is currently in the hands of developers! (That's build 8A428 for those keeping score at home.)
Obviously 10.4 is so close to be shipping that we can almost smell the Tiger dung, not only because Apple is using it at a conference, but also because it was declared Gold Master in late March. Unfortunately, none of the rumor sites have anything more concrete. ThinkSecret only says that it's "still on track for a release later this month". Hmmm, have the Apple lawsuits against rumor sites and informants withered up the grapevine?
Well it's lucky for all of us that our resident former astrophysicist and now less-than-sane street bum and pal, Cosmic Stan, can shed some light on the subject for us. We threw a package of Zebra Cakes at him earlier today and asked him when Tiger would available for purchase. He said, "Skittle pie's circumference plus cigarette-butt topping equals Reggie" - which I don't think anyone can argue quite plainly means April 15th.
Ahh, and what a lovely date for an Apple product to be announced. One, hey it's Friday and a good time for some OS X 10.4 release parties at the brick and mortar Apple Stores. One problem with that date is all the disasters that happened on the 15th, like the sinking of the Titanic, the Hillsborough Disaster, and um... that time I was bringing a pizza home and I stopped too fast and all the cheese slid to one side. Also, yours truly was born on the 15th of April, and in some circles that's considered a pretty unfortunate event as well.
But Apple has never been a company to worry about such superstitious sillyness. Heck, they launched the company on April Fools Day, 1976, and the original Apple I sold for $666. Plus the financial timing is ripe for those who got tax returns and money burning a whole in their pockets.
So there you have it - an April 15th release date for Tiger right on my birthday! Who's chipping in to get me a copy? Anybody? Hello? Helloooooooo?

I have a feeling that Apple was ready to announce Tiger on April 1st, but the critical condition of the Pope (and his death the next day) caused a change of plans. If this is the case then Apple showed good judgment, both in terms of respect and in recognizing that the media would be totally focused on the Pope on Friday and throughout this week.

Interesting note there ken. I wouldn't discount the fact that all of the rumor sites called for the first as well and Steve just said "Blow Em!"

Maybe it will be announced on the 13th. Isn't that the day of the quarterly report and a webcast?
