iMac G5_468x60
 New LCD's Down the Road?
MacOS Rumors has dished some dirt on new Apple displays. The rumor claims that Apple has a new company making LCD units for them, in 20.1 and 15.4 inch versions. The new displays are reportedly "both already built into Apple enclosures, and stockpiling at Apple".

Whether the rumor should be believed or not, well, that's your call - but it would make sense for Apple's product line. Apple has two CRT computers in the product lineup - the old school iMac and the eMac. The old iMac is pretty long in the tooth and the eMac's price point conflicts with the flat-panel iMac too much for it to be a very good seller. Not to mention the display problems it has.

Plus everyone knows Uncle Steve likes CRT's about as much as he likes red meat, and those 2 models in his precious lineup are probably eating at his mullet. And while he's off killing 2 different models, he could replace them with just one model at a sub-$1000 price by using the 15.4" LCD display.

It may be hard for Apple to make money on a computer with a built-in LCD for under $1000, but who knows, if it only has a G3, CD-ROM, and other no-frills stuff, it could happen... ya think?

Addendum -- Turns out I probably should have done some actual 'research' on this.

Many thanks to Peter Kline for letting us know that unit sales in Q1 for the eMac and CRT iMac are actually pretty good. Together, sales for the eMac (106,000 units) and the CRT iMac (58,000) outdid the flat panel iMac (134,000 units).

Still, while the eMac does seem to fill a niche market, it would be nice to see the G3 CRT iMac either updated feature-wise, or reduced in price. We do have to keep up with those PC using Jones'es!

So sorry about the mistake, but remember to read the tagline under our banner! Here, it's always humor first, and actual facts second. (Or lame attempts at humor first, and shoddy attempts at getting something close to something resembling a fact second. Or something.)
