Buckeye Music Swappers Busted |
|
As The Lantern reports, four students at Ohio State had a rude awakening last Monday night. But instead of the usual search for bongs and beer, the authorities were looking for a computer that was supposedly sharing music files. Not only was the computer serving the alleged files confiscated, but the coppers nabbed another computer (this one supposedly innocent of music sharing) as well as "video game manuals, Blockbuster cards, DVD and video games" and a DVD player. Bummer.
Police believed the students were using Direct Connect Hub to share the files (incidentally, there's an OS X version available). One of the students admitted to downloading the client version of Direct Connect, but said he didn't have a hub set up. The students weren't arrested, but they'll most likely face charges of some sort.
As a precedent, four other students were individually sued by the RIAA and were ordered to pay between $12,000 and $17,000 each.
Now, I'm not a lawyer, and won't pretend to know or even feign interest in the legalities of this situation (i.e. do the cops have the right to search and seize all that stuff, do the students have a leg to stand on legally, etc.).
However, I do know that $12,000 is a whole lotta moolah for downloading a few songs. At 99¢ a piece, the students could've gotten 12,000 songs (complete with album artwork and good karma!). Yes, the odds are still very low for getting caught with "illegal" music, and at 8 in almost 300 million U.S. citizens you may still want take that risk.
To be honest, I still use Acquisition for the odd song I can't get on Apple's Music Store, but for the most part, I get my music legally. Could the RIAA still come after me? Sure! But I'm not worried about it. Of course, after I post this, I may be getting a knock on the door...so if you don't hear from me for a few days, you know what's up! (And no, smartass, it doesn't mean I'm being lazy, sitting around watching TV and eating HoHos. Mmmmmm.......HoHos. If you'll excuse me, I have to go to the store.)
