 No, Not SPAM!
In a fight to protect its name, Hormel Foods has challenged the trademark application of SpamArrest. The good people of Hormel seem to have been able to take the jokes about their product and even the slang term for "unsolicited commercial e-mail" with a not uncommon "grin-and-bear-it" technique for many years. However, it seems they will only let it go so far.

Thank God that someone, back in the day, used the term "Spam" to describe their unwanted e-mail. Could you imagine if that guy liked SPAM and disliked fish sticks, or (heaven forbid) cheese! I couldn't even dream of a world where we were all trying to free our e-mail of fish sticks, or trying to prevent cheese from getting into our computer's inbox. But could you imagine the products? Fish Stick Annihalator, Cheese Shredder, Fish Stick Spatula, or even Cheese Whiz - oops, that one is already taken!

But anyway, back to the matter at Spam. I mean, at hand. This is a serious matter! Name recognition is everything in the canned meat industry. You don't want people thinking that it is a bad thing, so bad in fact that some other company is making a product designed to keep you from enjoying it, like Spam Scanner, Spam Killer, last but not least Spam Defender, all of which I am going to register trademarks for upon completing this article. Don't get me wrong, SPAM has been around since 1937 (before Al Gore invented the Internet), and any product that can say that must good. Right?

Do you mean the guys in the graphic at the top of the story?

They're muppets. I'm not really sure what you're asking about though.

If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong, though. It's Hambone.
