Windows Viruses: The Trusty Slow-News-Month Topic! |
|
Alright, you were good (you didn't even pee on the rug - GOOD BOY!) and we promised new content so here it is. Yup. Newwwwww content. Righhhht. [twiddles his thumbs]
Ok, so there's really not much to write about is there? Sure, there was the opening of the San Fran Apple Store that Steve Jobs himself presided over, and all the lucky bags and whatnot. But other than that there's really not much going on. Oooooo - a GarageBand Jampack update to 1.0.1, color me thrilled. There's not even any juicy rumors to fall back on, other than that the long-awaited revision to PowerMacs is going to be even more awaited, because we have to wait for a 10.3.3 update before the PowerMacs can be released.
Not even a trip to Tunica for yours truly and no Internet for 3 days could prime the Apple news pumps. Normally any day I'm not online is when all the cool stuff happens.
So what else is there to write about? Hmmm...something in the Windows world perhaps? There's always the "Virus of the Week" you could write about, but that gets old and no one wants to read that sort of thing.
Ah what the hell, let's do it for old times sake! And those few Windows users who don't realize that they don't have to live with viruses and that OS X has no known viruses whatsoever and that most Mac users don't even have a virus checker installed much less keep it up to date.
So today's Virus (brought to you by Orange Glo Clean Wipes!) is known as "Bagle" (or "Beagle" in certain hoighty-toighty circles) and it's REALLY making the rounds. As of last night, the 10th variant of the virus (ok, technically a worm) was discovered, and according to eWeek, "Officials at Network Associates Inc. have rated the worm as a medium risk and said they saw 50 unique samples of Bagle.J in a 90-minute period last night."
The worm sends out email from infected computers along with an attachment that, if clicked, initiates the worm's code. The sending address is spoofed to look like it came from the ISP of the person receiving the message. The email looks something along the lines of this:
Dear user of "Bright.net" mailing system,
We warn you about some attacks on your e-mail account. Your computer may
contain viruses, in order to keep your computer and e-mail account safe,
please, follow the instructions.
For more information see the attached file.
In order to read the attach you have to use the following password: 43008.
Cheers,
The Bright.net team
More info is available at Symantec's site.
Crazy, huh? Also crazy how many people click on the attachment. The #1 rule for Windows users is to never ever ever under any circumstances open an attachment if you don't know what it is or who it's from. Little-known rule #128 is to ignore rules number 1 through 127 for secure computer usage and just go out and get yourself a Mac.
Well there you have it, some content sqeezed from a rock. And sloppily at that! What more could you ask for?
Wait - don't answer that. The last time you did, the entire 2GAMAAW staff ended up in string bikinis with a gaggle of french midget prostitutes at a Denny's at 3:24 A.M.
On second thought, it wasn't all that bad a time ....

You know what get's me is every virus the headlines would also note Mac's are unaffected. What gets me though when people are talking about viruses on a tv show or radio the host would say question is Mac's more secure?
They just flat out lie and say "No it's that they (the virus writers) want to get the most bang out of there buck."
If even so wouldn't one person decide to write just one viruses because as mac users we do dangle that we don't get viruses and that there are none and most mac users don't use an antivirus scanner.
I think if a person was able to write a viruses and affect the Mac platform that would be a big bang for the buck and would get headlines. I bet CNET would even be willing to mention it.
But I still ask, why if it possible why hasn't one surfaced? I may never get an answer.

Here is a fun way to pass some time. Install Virtual PC on your mac then use windows to get your email. Open every attachment you get; then, when the virtual PC dies a horible death just through away the drive image and start again!
Thanks Bill Gates for yet another fun way to pass time!

What I Don't Like About Being A Mac User
Dr Rubaiyat Haque MA, MBBS, MRCP
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=6241
[From the story]
I purchased my first Apple Mac in October 2003, having been a Windows user for many years. It was a new iBook G4. I previously wrote an account of my early experience with this machine along with some of the problems that I encountered. A common criticism that I faced at the time was that I had written the article too early.

HUH, wow ... very good points. Y'know, I would've actually liked to post that as an article.
Yes there are Mac zealots, some that say Apple can do no wrong, but that is not the attitude of most of us on this site.
I think most of us believe that Apple has the best computing experience out there, NOT that they can do no wrong.
We don't care for intolerance of any kind - from the PC camp or the "Apple can do no wrong camp". We point out the truth (which we feel isn't getting a fair shake), state our opinion, have fun, and go on.
Just like PC users, some Mac users get a "holier-than-thou" attitude. But most of us on this site are basically just trying to let the world know they don't have to put up with things like viruses, and that things can be done easier and more quickly.
We rip Apple when they need it. Dig around the site to some older articles, as a matter of fact I think I once wrote something very similar to what you just said.
So not only do I think a lot of people that regularly visit this site have the same viewpoint as you, I think there are a lot more all over the Web. Unfortunately, the most ignorant are the loudest and talk the most, but that's just a fact of life.
(FYI, I don't see what this has to do with the article, but if you'd like to post something we can give you a writer's account)

Ah, I didn't realize you didn't write your entire comment, you merely copied someone's article and pasted the whole thing in there. I knew some of it was from osviews.com, but I thought you actually had some of your own opinion as well.
I should have known better from your previous comments. So nevermind.
So much for being a nice guy. I'll second sweetjimmyhugs on this one, especially since it's probably our favorite pal, Matt!

Isn't plagiary bad? Or at least wrong?
Dude, I'm sure, if you play nice, Jonahan would let you submit YOUR thoughts. But I am sure after doing that (pasting someone else's article), it may take some convincing that the thoughts/views are yours. But, if you are serious, go for it! I'd love to read another opinion.

The Authors name is still there, jackass, read your comment. But what most people do is say, "Hey this is what the author said" and they use something called "quotation marks".
