I Think Someone Broke The Internet |
|
I'm a little dismayed these days. It seems that some of the Internet is becoming less than spiffy.
My first clue that something was amiss was when billpalmer.net went down earlier this week due to odd business practices on the part of his hosting company. Then I noticed some weirdness happening here at 2GAMAAW that was, well...a little weird. Shouts were missing, the weather was missing (still is as of this writing) and people were claiming that OS X is not very secure. Weird.
Is this an effect of some virus spreading around on Windows servers? Maybe, maybe not. My Website runs on a UNIX server and it is nowhere to be seen at this hour, so that theory is out. The only plausible reason that the Internet isn't working is gremlins. Gremlins are running around and destroying Web servers, name servers, and even individual Websites.
Gremlins don't just magically appear either, someone had to release them into the wild. Who done it? SCO? Maybe. France? Not likely. The big headed banjo kid from Deliverance? Some questions even I don't want answers to.
So what do we do when we have a small business that relies on the Web to conduct business and no one can get to our site? Wait for "The Man" to get his act together? What do we do when we don't know whether to wear pants or not and can't get the advice that we need? Go outside with nothing covering the lower half of our bodies? What do we do when the voices in our head start speaking in tongues... oops, that's for a different story.
So to whoever broke the internet, please fix it. Thank you. |

And, it turns out the e-mails aren't coming from the forums. An investigation is underway, and will hopefully produce the name/location of the gremlins soon.

I should point out that the villain was my former webhosting company. My new webhosting company rocks...

Sorry about that Bill. I never claimed to be a journalist, so I shouldn't be judged too harshly for any errors in my reporting / spelling / grammer. You're lucky that I can even form complete thoughts.

Hey nice, that seems to have fixed the pesky "double-http://" thing going on in the comments URL field, but the news and weather are still confunkered. I bet it's somehow Bill Gates' fault. He's probably going to charge people to make the Innernet work again.

ehhhh... somebody(s) with floating IPs has been DOSing my MySQL database with a query that looks like this: SEARCH? x/o/x/o/x/o/x/o/x/o ad infinity. Cute, eh? Kiss of death.
