So What's Left For Steve To Show Off At WWDC? |
|
Well sweet jumpin' jehosefats, updated PowerMac G5's are here! Not that we weren't expecting them or anything, it's just that we're really thankful. Even though the Mac rumor sites picked up steam last week and started throwing around rumors like monkeys flinging poop, we've been let down so often that we took a "we'll believe it when we see it" stance.
Even the pre-release leakage of service documents that showed the first evidence that new PowerMacs were coming have proven to be real. Unfortunately, Apple didn't hit Steve Jobs' mark of 3.0 Ghz yet, and according to this InfoWorld article they won't anytime soon. "Tom Boger, Apple's Director of Power Mac Product Marketing said it came down to a technology challenge that was bigger than they expected. Boger also said today that users shouldn't expect to see a PowerBook G5 before the end of the year because of the challenges of putting the G5 in a small enclosure."
Talk about a bummer. We already have PC drones going on about how Steve didn't hit his mark, just like how the iTMS selling 70 million+ songs got turned into a negative thing when Apple didn't hit their self-imposed goal of 100 million songs.
But that's ok, stop sobbing - We have the new PowerMacs, remember! And if that's not enough to turn your frown upside down, there's also the shiny new Airport Express! For the low price of $129, you've got yourself a backwards-compatible 802.11g wireless (or "WiFi" if you will) base station that's small enough to toss in a backpack. Plus it'll stream tunes from your stereo to any iTunes-equipped computer. (That's right I said computer and not Mac and boy does that take some getting used to.)
But what does that leave for Steve to show off at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference later this month? Tiger of course, that's what most of it will be about. But the PowerMacs were everyone's second-safest bet, and now that G5-based iMacs and PowerBooks are out, surely there will be little for Steve to wow us with, right?
Well, maybe not. Just to whet your collective appetite, what about redesigned displays (that don't include Apple's own ADC connectors)? Or perhaps Steve will spring some 4th-gen iPods on us early this year? A long shot, as this expo is for developers, but stranger thigns have happened. There's also the iBook and Xserve, but those have both been updated fairly recently. Then there's everyone's favorite fairy tale products: the headless iMac, tablet, and PDA/Cell phone thingy. There's also been rumor that Tiger will sport more .Mac integration, and perhaps Apple will debut the much-rumored mini-mac/mama-iPod (also called Pal) that supports video, wireless, handwriting recognition, and serves as a small "home-away-from-bigger-Mac".
But then, your guess is as good as mine. Probably better, actually!

You know I've seen a lot of people on the net upset that Apple as of right now may not hit the 3.0ghz speed. Was Steve wrong by making that prediction last year? or do you think that IBM gave Apple a broken promise to use their processor instead of Intel or AMD or even a Motorola processor?
I don't think Steve does this on purpose but if they don't have a 3.0ghz System then I think Steve will have mud thrown at him from all of the PC Mags.
Also I am tired of people saying that Steve promised that he will sell 100 million iTunes songs ... because he didn't he set it as a very high goal and missed it but in the process iTunes Music Store has sold more songs than the rest of the market put together but nobody seems to mention that.

Right on rlhamon.
iTunes was a phenominal success. Believe it or not, the target for hte first year was ONE million songs. That was the projection to record company execs. They surpassed that by a factor of 70.
The delay in the 3GHz PowerMac is definately due to the fab problems IBM is having. I think they underestimated the challenge. That isn't to say that Apple isn't closer than they are letting on. I think they are closer to the G5 PowerBook as well. The cooling solution on the new PowerMac 2.5s is very elegant and you will see something similar in the PowerBooks.
When did the G5 based iMac come out? Did I miss something? It is inevitable, but there are cooling issues here beyond the PowerBook. A G5 based iMac might be up his sleeve at WWDC, but somehow I doubt it.

G5 iMac won't happen until Apple redesigns the form factor for the iMac. I just don't think they can cram a G5 into the iMac, the heat sink is too big.
Maybe they'll use an old cube as the basis for the design.... That'd look pretty darn cool.

yeah. The cube iMac is a good idea for cooling purposes. But then we lose the All-In-One traditional imac design. And it would just mimic the Power Mac G5s. Boring.

If the 4th Gen iPods are coming soon, I would expect too see them at the Euro iTunes Music Store launch event Jun 15th.

I only speculated that the cube could be the basis for the design. The all-in-one design is still possible. I don't think Apple is ready to jump ship on the all-in-one design, there is still a market.
As far as the "headless" iMac is concerned, no one would buy it. If you want a headless iMac go buy a G4 PowerMac. Problem solved.

Am I wrong, or did Apple just update their powerbooks to 1.5 ghz? I don't know what the last specs on powerbooks were so I'm not sure if 1.5 ghz is new or old.

Isn't that the other way 'round?

Don't make one more promise, Steve.
100 milion iTunes sales by April - Nope
3 ghz by end of summer - Nope
?????? - ???
Let's leave it at 2 strikes.

Mick, I stand corrected. I don't know how you would do it the other way 'round, but it would be interesting ;-)

Pete if you don't set very high goals how would you innovate the way that Apple does? I agree that not hitting marks does bring negative press to Apple but it only from the same groups that write negative press about Apple. The only thing that Steve does by making promises is feeding the animals.
If your looking for proof read cnet review of the first iPod .. if I remember right they said cost was too high, and I believe that they said that the iPod will be a flop.

The new G5s are a nice speedbump. Quit whining about not hitting 3GHz. Are we forgetting that the G5 is a 64 bit processor? And liquid cooled? On another "note," AirTunes is just freakin' cool! How long until the Pee-Cee world *tries* to copy Apple's latest innovation?

Zeus, are you on crack or something? Liquid cooled G5? Please step away from the pipe...

It looks like sweetjimmy needs to step away from the pipe. If you read the specs for the new G5 here
http://www.apple.com/powermac/design.html
you wouldn't look like you were uninformed.

My bad. I guess I should have dug a little deeper before I opened my big fat mouth. I appologize.
And I guess I should stop shooting heroin after 4PM.

SJH, I thought you told me you didn't HAVE any heroin? Why you holdin out on me, homes?

I think it's funny how people confuse "heroin" with "heroine", and sometimes accidently end up shooting up instead of going to get Supergirl.
