Jaguar Unleashed |
|
Well a few of us got bitten by the Jaguar bug. With initial intentions of not-so-legally using 10.2, we just had to go to the Jaguar Release Party and pick up a copy. So we headed down to Columbus (an hour and a half trip) to be greeted by a line of at least 200 people. It was like opening day! Another 200 or so hardcore Mac freaks showed up after us.
We met some cool people, had a lot of fun, but we were expecting to see a Jaguar mascot walking around the store...plus there was no pizza. But those facts aside, Apple really knows how to throw a party. Free Jaguar-print mousepads were flying around, you could enter to win an iMac, plus if you bought Jaguar you got a free T-shirt and 10% off any machine.
Now it's been said that Steve Jobs is a master salesman. Think about this: He got 400 people to go to an Apple Store and plunk down $129 for an update to an OS at 10:20 PM (not to mention that about 50 people were still waiting to get in when we left at 11:40 PM). Granted, Jaguar is VERY, VERY, VERY nice - but there is no other computer company that people get this enthused about.
One other thought that occurred to me - it was a full moon last night. Everyone knows people get just a little crazy and a little more pumped up around full moons. If it was planned, it was a pretty smart move by Steve. Of course, it's probably more likely that the moon had nothing to do with the turnout, but that we Mac people are just a bunch of dedicated freaks who know good computer software when we see it.
One last thing - the amount of copies of Jaguar sold. If the turnout at the Easton Towne Center is any indication, there were roughly 18,000 people across the country that went out and bought Jaguar last night. If everyone bought just one copy (and we saw many people buying 2 or more) that would be about $2,322,000 is sales. I don't know what the one-day sales records are for an OS, but here's hoping that Apple shattered that record! (And if not, well, we can take solace in the fact that Jaguar was only selling for 100 minutes). |

If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong, though. It's Hambone.
