Sell Your WiFi Bandwidth |
|
Want a quick and easy way to make some cash off that wonderful Airport Base Station? Then share your bandwidth to the world with LinSpot, and watch the millions of dollars just pour in!
O.K., not really. Most of us would be lucky to make enough just to cover broadband cost, unless of course we live in a heavily populated, and computer-savvy area. But the idea is really super-cool, and could take off. Plus, it's free, and as of right now the software that makes the money is Mac only. How cool is that?
So at this point you are probably wondering what the hell LinSpot is. Alright, quiet down and I'll tell you. LinSpot is software that allows you to offer your Airport (or any other WiFi router) connection to the world for a price. The world can then use your WiFi connection, from any computer (Mac, Linux, Windows, etc.) for that price; 15% of which goes to LinSpot, the rest goes to you. The pricing is pretty reasonable, from $2 per hour to $25 per month for someone to connect through your WiFi.
Then, when someone enters your wireless connection and tries to browse the internet, they will be greeted with a LinSpot logon screen where they can buy time from you. All payments go to your Paypal account. You can advertise your hotspot with printable advertisements through the locator on the website or through giant billboards in the sky if you want.
All in all, this would be a great way to get Internet access while on the go. Hopefully it will catch on. Right now, there aren't very many installations. In fact, when I did the locator for Ohio (where I am), there were none. There is a drawback to running this as well: with the LinSpot server running, you can't run another webserver, proxyserver, DHCP server or nameserver on the same port numbers as those used by LinSpot internally. But future versions are going to allow you to also configure your own Webserver with LinSpot. |

If you use this system, your broadband I S P could very likely cut off your service and possibly even sue you, depending on the contract that your terms of service agreement creates. Lots of ISPs don't even allow wireless sharing on their networks, never mind profiting commercially from bandwidth resale. Personally, I love the idea, (tho' I feel it might be a little too expensive) but if you try this I would get a copy of my broadband user agreement and look it over first. I think the Electronic Frontier Foundation (www.eff.org) was maintaining a list of wireless sharing-friendly ISPs, which may be useful to those of you interested in this idea.

Do you honestly believe that you would run more risk than when you leave your wireless network completely open?
In this case, the LinSpot people can track someone down if something strange happens.
And - hell yeah - I have no problem to upgrade to a better commercial line if this would bring any money!
